ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Need weekend plans? Craft fairs, National Moth Week science demonstrations and live Shakespeare are among the activities going on in the Asheville area this weekend.

Friday, July 18

The oldest craft fair in the Southern United States returns to downtown Asheville this weekend with over 100 artisans in tow. Founded in 1948 by the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the semiannual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands will feature everything from leather goods to live music. Tickets are $12 at the door. Children under 12 are admitted for free.

The Montford Park Players continue their 53rd season, “A Season of Lunatics, Lovers, & Poets,” with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” directed by Glenna Grant and starring a cast of deeply funny actors. The show is free to the public.

The public is invited to celebrate the Ecusta Trail’s grand reopening with a community blessing, remarks from local officials, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and other festivities throughout the evening, including a “celebration walk,” local vendors, live music and family-friendly activities. Stops along the trail highlight urban and rural character, with coffee shops, breweries and restaurants accessible along the route.

Saturday, July 19

Dozens of artists will be hawking their wares for the benefit of Animal Haven of Asheville all day Saturday at Pritchard Park, with musicians playing throughout the downtown umbrella market.

Asheville celebrates the beginning of National Moth Week with a family-friendly science experiment. The North Carolina Arboretum, ecoEXPLORE, the Asheville Municipal Golf Course and Friends of Asheville Muni are teaming up for the event, which will feature a demonstration of how moths are attracted to UV lights. Clint Dodson, of the “All Jammed Up” jam band podcast, is hosting a music festival at One World Brewing, featuring four alumni bands from previous podcast episodes. The show is headlined by Kendall Street Company and rounded out by Suns of Stars, Shed Bugs and Pickety Split. Tickets are $40.

Sunday, July 20

Chatt Hills Music will present South Carolina Americana duo Admiral Radio, comprised of husband and wife team Coty Hoover and Becca Smith, at the Olivette Riverside Pavilion, the first show on the stage since Hurricane Helene. While kids get in for free, tickets for adults are $25 and can be purchased here.
