ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — With September’s cooler start, folks may already be preparing for fall activities. Here are some end-of-summer events going on this weekend in Western North Carolina:
North Carolina Mountain State Fair
The North Carolina Mountain State Fair, sponsored by Ingles Markets, returns to the WNC Agricultural Center for its 30th year from Sept. 6-15. This year, there will be several new features, including new entertainment and an expanded Got to Be NC Pavilion featuring 22 new outdoor vendors.

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival
Currently entering its 17th year, the Carolina Mountains Literary Festival (CMLF) has become a beloved Carolina Mountains tradition. Held each fall the weekend after Labor Day, CMLF is a weekend-long celebration of all things literary, bringing together readers and writers from the WNC region and beyond. The festival takes place from Sept. 5-7 at the Burnsville Town Center.

Mental Health Matters Walk/Run for Awareness
September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness around the urgent crisis and find resources for anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts. In Asheville, All Souls Counseling Center (ASCC) is holding their second annual Mental Health Matters Walk/Run for Awareness on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at UNC Asheville. The untimed 5k race will begin at 10 a.m. at the Karl Straus Track and wind across the wooded and hilly 3.1-mile campus course. Check-in opens at 9 a.m., the walk/run begins at 10 a.m., and the morning’s activities conclude at noon.

Symphony in the Park
It’s the fourth annual Symphony in the Park pops concert, presented by Givens Communities! You’ll hear everything from classical to pop hits to Broadway in this free concert held in downtown Asheville’s Pack Square Park. Featuring works by Rossini, Strauss, Bizet, as well as music from Dune and Superman, alongside Queen and Broadway hits, this concert is perfect for the whole family!

Blue Ridge Bonsai Society 2024 Exhibition
The Blue Ridge Bonsai Society will present its 2024 Exhibition on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, 2024, from 10-5 pm at the Education Center at the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, NC. There will be exhibits of bonsai, suiseki (viewing stones), and kusamono (small plantings) on display as well as ongoing demonstrations throughout the exhibition.
