MARION, N.C. (828newsNOW) – With the raging winds yesterday, a new wildfire popped up and expanded rapidly. By 4 p.m. yesterday, the blaze centered in Pisgah National Forest had burned 75 acres. Overnight, its size more than doubled.

Now at 175 acres, the wildfire in McDowell County has roared to be a major burn. Its expansion will be aided by more significant wind gusts today. As of writing, the wildfire is listed on the North Carolina Forest Service wildfire tracker as zero percent contained.

The Madison and McDowell wildfire is tearing through Pisgah National Forest. The red dot marks where the fire that now covers nearly 200 acres supposedly originated.

No major populations centers are threatened at this time. If you live in a rural area between Old Fort and Spruce Pine, check with county officials for evacuation updates.

Hikers should be careful where in Pisgah National Forest they choose to hike, both for their safety and to avoid hindering containment efforts by firefighters.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article conflated two unrelated wildfires. The Madison County wildfire was extinguished yesterday.
