ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Crews have made progress on several wildfires burning in Western North Carolina, and rain expected throughout the week should help their efforts.
Sparkill Fire (Buncombe County)
The fire burning north of Swannanoa began Monday afternoon and was contained by late Monday night, according to Swannanoa Fire & Rescue. At last count, the fire had burned about 15 acres.
Bee Rock Creek Fire (McDowell County)
Firefighters increased containment to 50 percent on the 2,085-acre Bee Rock Creek Fire in McDowell County. Most of the added containment is next to the Blue Ridge Parkway, fire officials said. Although the east and west sides of the fire are uncontained, firefighters used drones with infrared cameras and found little to no heat near firelines. Crews also repaired areas disturbed by suppression activities.
Nearly all of the personnel assigned to the fire will demobilize to return home or to other incidents, the U.S. Forest Service said in a social media post Tuesday.
The national forests in North Carolina closed the area of the Bee Rock Creek Fire between Armstrong Creek Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway for public and firefighter safety. Some sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway are also closed. Check the National Park Service website for details before visiting.
Sam Davis Road Fire (Swain County)
The 400-acre wildfire burning about 4 miles southwest of Bryson City is about 85 percent contained.
The cause of the fire, which started April 18, 2025, is under investigation.
Crews on Tuesday will focus on providing point protection to homes near a small burnout area while beginning mop-up and rehabilitation work, according to Swain County Emergency Management. Strategic objectives remain to keep the fire west of Sam Davis Road, north of Lower Alarka Road, east of Dark Branch Road and south of Potato Hill.
The fire area includes several narrow mountain roads, including Sam Davis Road, Gospel Road, Big Rocky’s Road, Dark Branch Road, Bobcat Trail, Mr. Franks Cove and Mountainside Drive. To ensure safe and efficient access for fire crews and emergency vehicles, non-resident traffic will be turned around.
No evacuations are in place for any of these fires.
Smoke may be visible in areas near the fire zones.
Do NOT fly drones in or near the fire zones.
