ARDEN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — One person is dead and another wounded after a shooting took place Sunday evening at an Arden apartment complex.
A press release from the Asheville Police Department (APD) says officers responded to the 300 block of Long Shoals Road around 7:57 p.m. on July 7 for a report of a gunshot wound. This is where the Artisan at Biltmore Park apartment complex is located.
Once at the scene, they located a woman outside suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
“Responding officers rendered emergency aid and spoke to the victim until the arrival of EMS,” APD’s release says. “EMS transported the victim with life-threatening injuries to Mission Hospital for treatment.”
The victim’s exact condition is unknown at this time.
During their investigation, officers became aware of a potentially armed suspect who may have still been inside the apartment. Residents of the building were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
APD says Crisis Negotiation Officers “made repeated attempts to establish communication with the suspect, both verbally and via phone, but these efforts were met with no response.”
Officials say a drone was used to sweep the apartment area to assess for safety. During this flight, police discovered the suspect, identified as 77-year-old Gregory Wayne Holden, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to send an anonymous tip to APD using the TIP2APD smartphone application (search “Asheville PD” in your app store) or by texting TIP2APD to 847411. You can also call APD directly at (828) 252-1110.
MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN LONG SHOALS ROAD HOMICIDE
This is the same apartment complex where two other shooting incidents have been reported in recent months.
An 18-year-old was charged in the shooting death of 49-year-old Terry Lee Landrum Sr. Police say Landrum Sr. died from a gunshot wound on June 16. Knowledge Jamal Davis, 18, was arrested on June 19, and charged with first-degree murder and discharging a weapon in occupied property. A second person, Aria Shaquana Waters, 33, was arrested one day prior, and charged with being an accessory after the fact, possession of a stolen firearm, trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
ASHEVILLE JUVENILE TREATED FOR MINOR GUNSHOT WOUND IN LATEST INCIDENT
On April 17, police say a juvenile victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg at the apartment complex. The juvenile was transported to Mission Hospital where he was treated and released.
