
Local officials are scrambling to find ways to get kids back in classrooms despite power and water outages.

Several Asheville-area colleges, including UNCA, A-B Tech, and Warren Wilson College, are facing ongoing closures due to Hurricane Helene’s devastation. With power, water, and internet outages still in place, schools have become vital hubs for shelter and support. Key updates include suspended classes and storm shelter services for those in need.

Buncombe County Schools will remain closed from Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4, following significant damage caused by Hurricane Helene. School officials are coordinating with local emergency services to ensure the safety of students and staff.

School districts in Haywood, Swain and Graham counties have announced closures because of Hurricane Helene.
