
From gummy shrimp to sad pork belly, this Merrimon Avenue eatery serves up confusion

This weekend marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, which devastated Western North Carolina on Sept. 27, 2024. Between anniversary events commemorating the year since the storm, there are several festivals, performances and Blue Ridge-centric activities to check out this weekend. The Manhattan Short Film Festival is an annual showcase of 10 short films from all over the world. Previous festivals have seen documentaries, animation, star-studded casts and Oscar-winning entries, with awards for the best films decided by ballots cast by the audience.

This Saturday, North Asheville comic book and collectible shop Comic Envy will participate in Local Comic Shop Day, a national event which celebrates the community of brick-and-mortar comic shops with a day of sales and superheroes.

Second Gear, an outdoor gear and apparel consignment shop, is an Asheville staple of outdoor adventure and community-oriented business. Later this week, in conjunction with the consignment platform SimpleConsign, Second Gear will share its 21 years of consignment experience with the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The release show will held from 8 to 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26 at Eda’s, 1098 New Stock Road. Tickets are $10 at the door. The show is for ages 21 and up.

To mark the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene and the resilience of Western North Carolina in its aftermath, Root Cause Farm, a volunteer-based nonprofit dedicated to combatting community hunger, will hold a gathering to celebrate recovery and the local bonds which define the Fairview farm and its mission.

The ceremony, scheduled on the one year anniversary of Helene, will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Henderson County Courthouse, 200 N Grove St.

The annual Art on Main art show will return to Hendersonville this weekend for its 66th rendition, coinciding with the one year anniversary of Hurricane Helene.

Blue Dragons, an Asheville Americana and blues band, will perform two benefit sets at the Grey Eagle next weekend, the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene, in support of a Helene recovery album.
