ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Almost half of the city’s parks have reopened. Although city crews are still assessing the damage Tropical Storm Helkene inflicted on local parks and community centers, 32 of the facilities had reopened by Friday morning, officials said during a community briefing.
A full assessment will take more time, officials said. Though some spaces look safe, there may be broken equipment, sinkholes or other “unseen” dangers.
“Our team worked diligently in days leading up to the storms to mitigate as much potential damage as possible, but many parks have experienced substantial destruction,” a news release from the city said.
All waterfront parks are closed indefinitely. Riverside Cemetery is closed except for funeral services.
Water for drinking fountains has been shut off. Do not drink any water from the fountains until further notice.
If a park is listed as closed, people should stay away from that facility.
Previously scheduled activities, events, programs and rentals are canceled. All picnic shelter, sports field and community center rentals are also canceled until further notice.
Event producers working with the city of Asheville’s Office of Special Events should ask their representative about previously permitted events.
