ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — March 13, 2022. That was the last time any measurable snow fell in Asheville, according to the National Weather Service.

But that drought could end later this week when cold high pressure builds across Western North Carolina. The system could bring light snow showers Thursday night and Friday morning.

Wind gusts in excess of 45 mph are expected at higher elevations, especially in exposed areas, on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. Isolated power outages will be possible.

The forecast, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Wednesday: Areas of fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny with a high near 70. Light west-northwest wind becoming northwest 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph.
  • Wednesday night: Mostly clear with a low around 34. West-northwest wind 13 to 18 mph with gusts as high as 34 mph.
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny with a high near 47. Breezy, with a west-northwest wind 11 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 33 mph.
  • Thursday night: A of snow showers before 4 a.m., then a chance of rain showers between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., then a slight chance of snow showers after 5 a.m. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Partly cloudy with a low around 31.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 43. Breezy.
  • Friday night: Mostly cloudy with a low around 33.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high near 50.
  • Saturday night: Mostly clear with a low around 30.
  • Sunday: Sunny with a high near 58.
