ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As some Western North Carolina residents are digging out jackets for what is likely to be the coldest temperatures so far this season, others may be looking for sleds.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several WNC counties.

Avery, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell and Yancey counties can expect total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches in lower elevations and 2 to 4 inches on ridgetops with a few isolated ridgetop locations getting 4 to 6 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday for elevations above 3,500 feet in Haywood and Swain counties. Total snow accumulations mainly of 2 to 4 inches with 4 to 7 inches are expected on the highest ridgetops generally above 5,000 feet, the National Weather Service said.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility and use caution while driving.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Buncombe County until 6 a.m. Thursday. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected, the National Weather Service said.

The strong wind gusts this evening and tonight could bring down additional trees and limbs that were damaged by Helene back in late September, the advisory said.

The National Weather Service said there is a 20 percent chance of snow showers in Asheville after 10 p.m. Thursday, and there’s a 20 percent chance of snow Friday.
