ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Evacuation orders were issued Wednesday afternoon for areas along Bat Cave Road near Old Fort because of an out-of-control wildfire.
Early in the afternoon, authorities said the fire was burning around the 3000 block of Bat Cave Road and moving toward Pine Cove Road. People living in the 3000-4500 block area of Bat Cave Road, Pine Cove Road, Juliet Drive, Roy Moore Road and all side roads were urged to evacuate until the fire was under control, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said in an alert.
Within an hour, high winds had pushed the fire across the roadway creating rapidly worsening conditions.
Another evacuation was recommended for residents in the 1000 block of Lavender Road and all of Cozy Cove Drive. A short time later, Cherry Springs and Comfy Cove roads were included in the evacuation notice.
The notice also included all private drives that turn off the roads listed above.
Fire crews are actively working to contain the fire, but evacuation was strongly advised. Do not delay. If you are in the affected area, leave immediately, the alert said.
High winds continue to create dangerous fire conditions. Firefighters are focusing on structure protection for multiple homes in the area and continue work on establishing fire containment lines, according to the alert.
As of 6 p.m., the wildfire burning in the Crooked Creek community of McDowell County was estimated at 200 acres with 5 percent containment, authorities said. Winds are expected to diminish through the evening.
“As of now, there have been no reported injuries, though multiple outbuildings have been destroyed by the blaze. All emergency agencies within McDowell County, along with support from neighboring counties, and state and federal partners, are actively working to combat the fire and protect life and property,” the emergency alert said.
People are urged to avoid this area unless evacuating from their homes.
An emergency shelter is opening at First Baptist Church in Old Fort on East Main Street.
