ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Heavy rain is expected to continue through the overnight hours Tuesday before a brief respite Wednesday. Rain is expected to pick up again late in the day and peak Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Minor flooding may develop along some area rivers, mainly along the French Broad, Tuckasegee and Pigeon rivers, the NWS said. Localized nuisance flooding of low-lying and poor-drainage areas can’t be ruled out Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

A Flood Watch is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Cherokee and Clay counties.

Many Western North Carolina counties are also under a Winter Weather Advisory.

Counties impacted by the advisory, which is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, include Yancey, Mitchell, Buncombe, Henderson, Caldwell, McDowell, Rutherford and Polk.

An Ice Storm Warning is in effect until 7 a.m. for Avery and Burke counties

Another round of heavy rainfall is possible Wednesday evening into Thursday morning as a slow-moving cold front enters the area.
