BRYSON CITY, N.C. (828newsNOW) – A slew of wildfires are sweeping across the Carolinas with more than 8,000 acres burning in Burke, Polk and Henderson counties and sections of South Carolina. As of yesterday, a new wildfire sprang up in force in Swain County.

Overnight, the 85-acre fire swelled to its new staggering total. At 500 acres, the wildfire is burning only a few miles south of the seat of Swain County: Bryson City. As of reporting, the blaze is 0 percent contained.

Evacuations have been ordered for some residents near the fire, including in the Unahala and Alarka areas.
