ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is set to close a stretch of Interstate 40 West this weekend, weather permitting, to allow crews to perform bridge rehabilitation work.

DBA Harrison Construction Co. of Asheville will close I-40 West from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, from Hendersonville Road (Exit 50) to Interstate 26. Crews will work on the westbound bridge over the French Broad River.

The primary detour will route traffic onto I-240 West starting at Exit 53B. Digital signs are in place to notify drivers to use I-240 West instead of I-40 West. The Brevard Road on-ramp to I-40 West will also be closed, with traffic detoured to I-240 West.

This is the final scheduled weekend closure for the project. The remaining work will take place at night.

Planned operations this weekend include bridge joint repairs before reopening I-40 West by 6 a.m. Monday. The contractor faces penalties if the interstate remains closed beyond that time.

The $27.9 million rehabilitation project includes roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays. It will also address spalling concrete on bridge substructures, including piers, and improve the riding surface on four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek and two over the French Broad River. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2026.
