HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — About 150 bowlers gathered at Tarheel Lanes on Thursday night for the ninth annual Strikeout Childhood Cancer Bowling event.

The goal was to raise $12,000 for St. Baldrick’s of Western North Carolina. But the bowlers, teams and sponsors went above and beyond with a late push that sent the total to $12,791, organizer Barbara Ritchey said.

The tournament also featured a raffle, DJ, food, and loads of fun, all while helping fund childhood cancer research.

“Kids with cancer are our reason for it all. They’re the inspiration behind our event and the reason we’re helping fund childhood cancer research,” the event’s website said. “We believe all kids should be able to grow up and turn their dreams into realities.”
