ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Art Museum will unite the photographs of seven Indigenous artists in their latest exhibit, “Native America: In Translation.”
The exhibit will open on Thursday, May 22 and run through Monday, Nov. 3, 2025 in the Appleby Foundation Exhibition Hall.
The photographs, curated by Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star, feature the work of Rebecca Belmore, Jacqueline Cleveland, Martine Gutierrez, Duane Linklater, Kimowan Metchewais, Alan Michelson and Koyoltzintli, photographers and lens-based artists from across North America.
The exhibit include self-portraits, multimedia assemblages and performance-based imagery asking “urgent questions of identity, heritage, land rights, and the ongoing impact of colonialism,” the museum described in a press release.

“Native America: In Translation” is an expansion on Red Star’s guest editorial work in the Fall 2020 issue of Aperture magazine, a special edition about photography and Indigenous lives.
“In the Apsáalooke language, Áakiwilaxpaake – People of the Earth – speaks to Indigenous communities’ deep connection with this land,” said Red Star in the press release. “These artists provide sharp perceptions rooted in their own cultures, speaking powerfully to the present while acknowledging the weight of history.”
Associate Curator and Curatorial Affairs Manager Jessica Orzulak described Red Star as a “brilliant artist” and complimented her exhibition for uniting the work of exciting voices in photography.
“The featured artists explore pressing questions about our shared histories while pushing the medium in compelling new directions,” Orzulak said in the release.
