ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the region late Monday afternoon into the evening, according to the National Weather Service. Some of the storms may become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts being the primary threat.

Precipitation chances will taper from west to east overnight as a weather trough shifts eastward. However, a slight chance of rain will linger into early Tuesday morning, particularly in the mountains and foothills.

As a warm front lifts across the southeastern part of the area, low clouds and fog may develop overnight. Temperatures are expected to remain several degrees above normal in the southeast, while mountain areas will see near-normal lows.

Conditions are forecast to become calmer Tuesday and Wednesday as a deep trough moves away from the region. Dry weather is expected to return with downslope winds and subsiding air behind the front. While a few isolated showers may pop up Tuesday — mainly in the mountains and east of Interstate 77 — most areas will remain dry, forecasters said.

Temperatures will trend slightly warmer than Sunday, continuing a stretch of above-normal highs under mostly sunny skies. Another round of unsettled weather may arrive by the end of the week and into the weekend.
