ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville Public Works crews are rebuilding a section of Old Toll Road after a landslide triggered by Tropical Storm Helene left it impassable last fall.
The landslide occurred Sept. 27, 2024, near the intersection with Sunset Drive, following heavy rainfall from Helene. The storm caused an estimated $1 billion in damage to city-owned property.
Crews began reconstruction in March, focusing on installing stormwater infrastructure and restoring the road base, officials said in a social media post. Work includes building a retaining wall, paving and adding a guardrail to reduce future risks and improve slope stability.
The city is seeking federal reimbursement through the FEMA Public Assistance program and the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to help fund the project.
This marks one of the final major road repairs from Helene’s aftermath and represents a key milestone in Asheville’s broader recovery efforts.
