ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Storms began developing again across the Asheville area Friday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg to issue a Special Weather Statement at 3:21 p.m.
According to Doppler radar, a strong thunderstorm was located about 11 miles northeast of Waynesville, or roughly 6 miles north of Clyde. The storm was nearly stationary.
Forecasters warned of wind gusts between 50 and 55 mph and the potential for penny-size hail.
The storm is expected to remain primarily over rural parts of northeastern Haywood and west central Buncombe counties. The National Weather Service advised that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor items is also possible.
Residents in the affected area were urged to seek shelter indoors and continue monitoring local radio and television stations for updates, as the storm could intensify.
