ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District has cleared more than 8 million cubic yards of debris from Western North Carolina in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, the agency announced.
The milestone comes more than nine months after the storm caused widespread destruction across the region. Nearly 180 Army personnel and civilians are currently deployed in the ongoing recovery mission, coordinating with more than 500 contract workers across nine counties.
Officials said waterway debris removal is on track to be completed by July 31, 2025, with the private property debris removal phase expected to wrap up by Aug. 31.
Hurricane Helene made a significant impact on Western North Carolina, leaving behind damage that prompted a long-term, multi-agency response. The Corps continues to lead cleanup and recovery operations in partnership with state and local authorities.
