BREVARD, N.C. (828newsNOW) — This week at Brevard Music Center’s Summer Festival features several concerts, including patriotic favorites, beloved orchestral works and performances by major guest artists.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3, Grammy-winning conductor Leonard Slatkin leads the Brevard Music Center Orchestra in Dvořák’s New World Symphony, with violinist Stella Chen featured in Barber’s Violin Concerto. The program opens with “Double Play” by composer Cindy McTee, whose orchestral works have been performed worldwide. Commissioned by the Detroit Symphony and conducted in its premiere by Maestro Slatkin, the piece sets the tone for an evening of bold, expressive music.

The annual Pendergrast Family Patriotic Pops concert returns at 2 p.m. Friday, July 4, featuring the Brevard Symphonic Winds, members of the Janiec Opera Company and vocalists from the U.S. Air Force Band Singing Sergeants.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, Brevard Music Center presents Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4, featuring internationally acclaimed cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, followed by Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Symphony No. 4.

The week closes at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, with From Beethoven to Bernstein, a program conducted by Ken Lam featuring Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture,” works by Copland and Sibelius, and selections from “West Side Story.”
