ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville residents are being urged to prepare for a stretch of active summer weather, including strong thunderstorms, high winds and potential flash flooding through the weekend.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg said Friday morning that isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall as the primary hazards.

Periods of showers and storms are expected each day through Sunday, with an 80 percent chance of rain Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will remain seasonably hot, with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s.

The weather service warned that heavy rainfall could lead to isolated flash flooding, especially in urban areas, low-lying spots and locations with poor drainage.

In response, the Asheville Fire Department shared safety recommendations ahead of high wind and flooding events:

  • Secure loose objects such as patio furniture and garbage bins.
  • Trim trees and remove weak branches that could fall during high winds.
  • Charge essential devices and prepare backup power sources.
  • Identify a safe shelter space within your home, like an interior room or basement.
  • Assemble an emergency kit with food, water, first-aid supplies and flashlights.

Fog is also expected during morning hours through the weekend, especially before 9 a.m., potentially reducing visibility for commuters.

The weather is forecast to begin stabilizing by the middle of next week, following the passage of a weak cold front.

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, avoid flooded roadways and monitor local forecasts via radio, television or weather.gov.
