ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville police are investigating the city’s fourth gunfire incident in a week after a shooting late Wednesday left one person injured in a residential neighborhood.
Officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire on John Street at about 11:03 p.m. on July 23. While en route, police were informed that one person had been shot. Upon arrival, officers provided life-saving aid before emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Mission Hospital. The individual, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, was listed in stable condition.
Preliminary findings indicate that suspects in a dark-colored sedan fired shots from the roadway. Investigators recovered 22 shell casings at the scene and noted damage to one residence and one vehicle. No additional injuries were reported.
This marks the fourth confirmed gunfire incident in Asheville in the past week. In response, detectives are urging anyone with information to contact Asheville Police at 828-252-1110 or submit an anonymous tip through the TIP2APD app or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.

Following the shooting, Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer and Police Chief Michael Lamb issued a joint statement addressing the recent uptick in gun violence.
“Our hearts are with the victims, families, and community members affected by the recent spike in gun violence,” the statement read. “The community and residents of Asheville deserve better than to face the threat of gun violence in their neighborhoods and outdoor spaces.”
City officials said the Asheville Police Department is continuing to work with federal and state agencies through the Gun Violence Task Force, which includes partners from the FBI, DEA, ATF, U.S. Attorney’s Office, North Carolina SBI and local prosecutors. The task force focuses on identifying and prosecuting repeat violent gun offenders.
Police have also increased patrols in areas experiencing gun violence, and city leaders are urging the community to assist in prevention efforts by sharing information that could help de-escalate tensions and solve crimes more quickly.
“Addressing (this crisis) requires more than the dedication of our police department,” the statement said. “It requires the active collaboration of city leaders, community members, and organizations working together to find solutions.”
No arrests have been made in the latest shooting as of Thursday morning.
