ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Dry high pressure will hold over Western North Carolina through Monday, but a developing coastal low could bring midweek showers before conditions clear again late in the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Cloud cover is expected to increase overnight into Monday morning, with isolated showers possible over the mountains by the afternoon. Areas northeast of Interstate 26 may see slightly cooler temperatures Monday because of the cloud cover.

Forecasters say an upper low near Jacksonville, Florida, is shifting north and drawing moisture into North Carolina, which may help trigger spotty mountain convection Monday.

The forecast for Asheville and surrounding areas:

  • Monday: Partly sunny with a high near 80. Light winds becoming easterly around 6 mph.
  • Monday night: Mostly cloudy with a low near 57. Patchy fog possible before dawn.
  • Tuesday: A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Mostly cloudy with a high near 77.
  • Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy with a low around 56.
