HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Haywood County will host more than 100 travel journalists and content creators in 2026 when the Society of American Travel Writers holds its annual conference at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center.

The four-day event, scheduled for next October, will bring together members of the professional organization for networking and workshops while offering an in-depth look at Western North Carolina’s culture, cuisine and outdoor experiences.

Visit Haywood, which submitted a competitive bid earlier this year, was chosen to host the conference. Recent sites have included Detroit, Istanbul and Puerto Rico.

“From the peaks of the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains to vibrant small towns like Canton, Clyde, Lake Junaluska, Maggie Valley and Waynesville, Haywood County offers a compelling blend of natural beauty and Appalachian hospitality,” Gov. Josh Stein said in a statement. “Western North Carolina is open for business, and I know the Society of American Travel Writers will be grateful for choosing our unforgettable state.”

Tourism officials say the event will generate visitor spending while exposing local businesses, attractions and outdoor outfitters to national travel media. Attendees will take part in excursions that highlight hiking, biking, pottery, farm tours, dining and other experiences.

“As Haywood County’s tourism economy continues to regain momentum following Helene, this opportunity could not have come at a better time,” Visit Haywood Executive Director Corrina Ruffieux said in the news release. “Bringing SATW members here means our local partners, from restaurants and shops to attractions and outdoor outfitters, will gain exposure to storytellers who can help share the magic and resilience of our destination with travelers from across the country.”

Founded in 1955, SATW has more than 800 members from the United States, Canada and beyond, contributing to leading print, digital and broadcast outlets worldwide.
