OLD FORT, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As the first anniversary of Hurricane Helene approaches, Old Fort Mayor Pam Snypes reflected on the town’s recovery and resilience.

The storm, which struck on Sept. 27, 2024, caused widespread damage and left many residents without homes or belongings. In the immediate aftermath, the community rallied together to assist neighbors and begin rebuilding, Snypes said.

“This past year has been incredibly challenging — but we are not only surviving, we are thriving,” Snypes said in a message posted to Facebook. “Old Fort is growing. New businesses have opened their doors, and new families have chosen to call our town home. That growth will continue because of the strength and spirit of this community.”

The mayor expressed gratitude to the town’s Emergency Management director and staff, volunteers, organizations that donated supplies, the board of aldermen and residents who offered support and prayers.

To commemorate the anniversary and celebrate the town’s recovery, Old Fort will host McDowell County’s Recovery & Resilience Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Old Fort Elementary School. The event will include food trucks, live music and a fireworks display in the evening.

“A year ago, Hurricane Helene tried to knock us down — but she failed. We are still here. We are standing strong. And we will continue to move forward, together,” Snypes said.
