ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A local architecture firm will present community-generated alternatives to UNC Asheville’s proposed Millennial Campus development this week.
Scott Burroughs, of This Land Studio, is set to unveil the results of his UNCA Woods Community Visioning Workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. The presentation will take place in the atrium of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 789 Merrimon Ave., at the start of the Save the Woods general meeting.
The meeting will highlight alternative design ideas for the university’s 54-acre wooded property, where UNCA and Asheville City Soccer Club have proposed a 5,000-seat mixed-use soccer stadium and concert venue, along with retail space and market-rate housing.
Burroughs’ presentation will include conceptual designs showing other potential locations and configurations for the project, developed during a three-day community design charrette in August. The workshop, hosted by Save UNCA Woods, drew local architects, designers, residents and public officials.
Following the presentation, Save the Woods members will provide updates on advocacy efforts, future plans, and ways for community members to get involved. Merchandise such as T-shirts and yard signs will also be available for purchase.
Organizers note the meeting will be held downstairs in the church atrium, accessible from the main parking lot and the McDonald’s lot next door.
The Save UNCA Woods initiative continues to push back against the university’s proposed development, calling for the preservation of what advocates describe as a vital urban forest and community green space.
