ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A man was arrested on drug trafficking charges Wednesday after he allegedly fled a traffic stop in downtown Asheville and then started throwing crack cocaine out of the window of his car, Asheville Police said in a release.
According to police, officers were conducting crime prevention about 5:37 p.m. at South French Broad Avenue and Ralph Street when they attempted to make contact with a man in a vehicle.
“While initially attempting to evade officers, he began throwing crack cocaine out of the window of his car into the roadway,” the release stated.
The man, later identified as Daroyal Delmaine James, 31, was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
Recovered in the case were 48.27 grams of crack cocaine, 3.52 grams of marijuana and 1 DU of Oxycodone, police stated in the release.
James has been charged with trafficking in cocaine by possession, trafficking in cocaine by transport, possession with intent to sel/distribute a Schedule II controlled substance, flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, and driving on a revoked license.
James was booked into Buncombe County Detention Facility on a no-bond hold, meaning he is ineligible for release prior to further court proceedings.
