ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A man who died after an officer-involved shooting in Asheville has been identified as James Jones, authorities said Wednesday.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting, which occurred late Tuesday on Hendersonville Road and left Jones dead and an officer injured.

According to the Asheville Police Department, officers responded around 9:45 p.m. to a report of a person with a gun at a business in the 1900 block. When officers approached the entrance, the suspect fired through a glass door, and officers returned fire, striking him.

Jones was taken to a local hospital, where he died Wednesday after life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, the SBI said.

One officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries from broken glass caused by the gunfire.

SBI agents were requested by Asheville police and the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office to conduct an independent investigation. Agents responded shortly before midnight and began collecting evidence.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional details have been released.
