ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The City of Asheville is asking residents for input on a proposed change to its disaster recovery housing plan that would significantly increase funding to repair homes damaged by Tropical Storm Helene.
The proposal would amend the city’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Action Plan and redirect additional money into the Renew NC Single-Family Housing Program. City officials say the shift is aimed at speeding up housing recovery and helping more residents return to their homes.
If approved, the program’s allocation would jump from $3 million to $22.2 million. The city estimates the increase could help repair or fully rebuild about 55 to 65 homes.
Residents will have several opportunities to weigh in.
The public comment period runs from May 15 through June 14. A public hearing is also scheduled for the Asheville City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 9.
Beginning May 15, residents can review the proposed amendment online at Asheville Recovers or request a printed copy at Asheville City Hall, 70 Court Plaza.
