HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Former district attorney Greg Newman has been hired as a staff attorney for the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office announced the hiring Sept. 8 in a social media post welcoming Newman to the agency.
“Please join us in welcoming the newest member of the HCSO Family!” the post said, identifying Newman as a staff attorney.
Newman served as district attorney for Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties from 2013 until 2021. He served as Hendersonville’s mayor from 2005 to 2009.
Newman’s tenure as district attorney ended in April 2021, when Superior Court Judge Robert Ervin ordered him permanently removed from office.
The removal followed a proceeding that included complaints about Newman’s handling of several cases. At the center was a sexual assault case in which the victim’s family said Newman had denied them the opportunity to be heard in court.
In 2020, the North Carolina State Bar disciplined Newman over a false statement in a child rape case. He was suspended but allowed to continue practicing law.
In February 2021, more than a dozen families from Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties filed a motion seeking Newman’s removal, alleging a pattern of willful misconduct. A hearing was held in April, with former co-workers, law enforcement officials and former clients testifying for and against Newman.
Ervin ruled April 27 that Newman should be removed from office.
The State Bar disciplinary matter and the judicial proceeding that resulted in Newman’s removal were separate proceedings.
Newman has continued to practice law.
