ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Hot and humid conditions return to Asheville on Friday, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees before a higher chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Saturday.
Friday should be mostly sunny, with a high near 90 and light winds. Clouds will increase tonight, with temperatures dropping to around 66.
The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg expects isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop Friday afternoon and early evening. A few storms could become strong to severe, with damaging winds the primary threat.
Storm chances increase Saturday as a frontal boundary moves into the region and moisture builds.
Asheville has an 80 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday, particularly after 2 p.m. The high is expected to reach about 83 degrees, with rainfall totals generally between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch. Higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms.
The chance of rain and storms drops to 30 percent Saturday night, with a low around 65.
Sunday should be drier, with mostly sunny skies and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The high is expected to reach about 85 degrees.
The weather service expects temperatures to cool to around normal Saturday as clouds and storms increase, with above-normal temperatures returning next week.
Morning fog or low clouds also could develop in some mountain valleys over the next several days, particularly Sunday and Monday.
