ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — More than two months after two people were killed and seven others wounded in a shooting on Biltmore Avenue, Asheville police have made no arrests in the case. But investigators now say the shooting is connected to four others across Western North Carolina.

Asheville Police Department spokesman Rick Rice confirmed investigators have identified connections among five shootings in three jurisdictions, including the July 19 double homicide on Biltmore Avenue.

Charges have been filed in two of the other shootings, and three people are in custody. Additional charges are expected as the investigations continue, Rice said.

Police are not identifying the other jurisdictions involved because those investigations remain active, Rice said.

Two connected shootings identified

Police Chief Jackie Stepp offered more details during the Asheville City Council Public Safety Committee’s Sept. 24 meeting.

Stepp said the five connected incidents include the Biltmore Avenue shooting, the July 5 shooting at Maple Crest Apartments on Lee Garden Lane and an April shooting in the Hillcrest area.

Charges have been filed in the July and April cases, she said. Stepp said a juvenile was responsible for both shootings and had been apprehended along with two other people.

Police have not publicly identified the remaining two shootings.

APD also has not said exactly how investigators determined all five shootings are connected. Rice said answering many of 828newsNOW’s questions could affect the active investigations.

The department has not said that the three people in custody in the other cases were involved in the Biltmore Avenue shooting.

The Biltmore Avenue investigation

The Biltmore Avenue shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. July 19 in the 250 block near Short Coxe Avenue.

Lamarius Jones, 22, and Marques Davis Jr., 24, were killed, and seven other people were injured.

Police previously described the shooting as a targeted, retaliatory attack stemming from an ongoing conflict. Investigators said it was directly connected to the July 5 shooting at Maple Crest Apartments, where a man was shot in the shoulder.

Marqua Amryie Lamar Davis, 19, was charged in connection with the July 5 shooting. APD has not said Davis has been charged in connection with the Biltmore Avenue shooting.

As the Biltmore Avenue investigation progressed, police said detectives identified several suspects and co-conspirators, recovered what they believed was the vehicle used in the shooting and executed more than 25 warrants and subpoenas.

Investigators also collected digital evidence and sent what APD described as a potentially crucial piece of evidence to the FBI laboratory for analysis.

Despite those developments, no one has been arrested or charged specifically in connection with the July 19 shooting.

State, federal agencies remain involved

State and federal agencies also remain involved in the investigation.

Stepp told the Public Safety Committee that the FBI, State Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been working closely with APD since the Biltmore Avenue shooting and remain involved in trying to solve the case.

Stepp also pointed to rapid ballistic forensics as one tool helping investigators move more quickly in recent shooting cases.

For now, police are keeping many details about the connections among the five shootings under wraps, including the identities of the other two shootings and the third jurisdiction involved.

The investigations remain active, Rice said, and additional charges are expected.
