CANTON, N.C. (828NewsNow.com) — Lane closures will be in place for the week of Nov. 9-13 on Interstate 40 in Canton, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
According to a Nov. 6 news release, a contractor with the NCDOT will be closing the inside lanes of I-40 near Incinerator Road from 7 p.m. Nov. 9 through noon Nov. 13 so crews can safely upgrade drainage structures in the median.
The NCDOT said the operation will improve drainage, reducing ponding on the roadway, and diminish the possibility of an icy interstate in the winter months.
According to the release, crews from Wright Brothers Construction will move the median safety barrier, excavate drainage structures, connect new pipes into drainage boxes, backfill the voids, pave a new surface and pour a new safety barrier. The aggressive schedule utilizing daytime and nighttime crews is designed for efficiency and to remove the lane closure as promptly as possible, the release said.
This operation is part of a $23.2 million project to replace the I-40 bridges over Incinerator Road. To date, crews have completed 80% of the work and remain on schedule to finish in the spring, the NCDOT said.
Transportation officials remind drivers to remain alert, obey all posted signs traffic signs and follow instructions of flaggers for the safety of motorists and workers.
