ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — More than 200 people attended a city open house last week focused on recovery and planning for Asheville’s riverfront areas following widespread damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene.
City officials said the strong turnout Wednesday highlighted community interest in the future of parks, greenways and public infrastructure along the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers. The meeting marked the first phase of a public engagement process aimed at rebuilding the Azalea and French Broad River areas in ways that are more resilient and better suited for future generations.
While the storm caused extensive destruction, city leaders said residents expressed a shared desire to reimagine and revitalize the riverfront corridors.
Asheville officials are encouraging residents to continue providing feedback through an online Riverfront Recovery Survey, available here through Dec. 19.
