ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an 18-year-old man found in Candler as a homicide following preliminary autopsy results, authorities said Tuesday.
Joseph Rose was found dead about 3:39 p.m. Friday near 69 Gilbert B. Crook Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Rose had been reported missing to the Asheville Police Department on Dec. 2.
After reviewing initial autopsy findings, investigators determined the case should be classified as a homicide. The sheriff’s office did not release the cause or manner of death, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.
“We realize there are many questions about this case, and our Criminal Investigations Division is committed to getting answers for Joseph’s family,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Officials said updates will be provided as information becomes available.
Family members said Rose was last seen around Nov. 24 and did not attend Thanksgiving, which they described as out of character.
In a social media post, Rose’s sister, Rose Ivory, said her brother’s body was found “in a ditch… in a fairly public area,” and called the circumstances suspicious. “Joseph would not be found deceased this way,” she wrote. “He was a friend to all. He believed in loving one another.”
