ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Hot and humid conditions will persist across the western Carolinas this week, with daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected through Thursday, the National Weather Service said Monday.

Forecasters said the greatest concern remains the potential for isolated flash flooding, particularly in areas north of Interstate 40, where repeated downpours could overwhelm local drainage systems. Afternoon storms are likely each day, with activity diminishing after sunset and mostly quiet overnight conditions expected.

Temperatures are expected to run slightly above normal for mid-June, with high humidity contributing to heat index values approaching the upper 90s and possibly reaching 100 degrees south of Interstate 85 by midweek.

Storm coverage is expected to be more widespread Tuesday compared to Wednesday, though the risk of severe weather is low, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold front is forecast to push across the region Thursday night, bringing another round of storms followed by a temporary break in the heat and humidity on Friday. However, forecasters said hotter temperatures are expected to return by Sunday.
