ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Western North Carolina has long been an outdoor enthusiast’s dream destination. One gym in Asheville is making sure outdoor athletes can stay in peak condition for their adventures.
McHone Performance Training (MPT), which focuses on mountain athlete training, recently moved into a facility situated at 5 Sweeten Creek Road, Suite 130 in Asheville’s Biltmore Village.
Steven McHone, the founder and lead trainer of MPT, tells 828newsNOW each coach is highly qualified and experienced with diverse backgrounds in trail running, mountain biking, climbing and outdoor adventure.
“We’re a very active community,” he says. “A majority of our folks are spending four to five days outside in the woods, whether they’re hiking, mountain biking.”
The gym will have in-house physical therapy and sports massage available by appointment, a press release from MPT says.
McHone says the gym was previously located in the River Ridge Plaza for five years until they outgrew the space. He adds that they are also located at 69 Hendersonville Highway, Suite 3, in Pisgah Forest.
McHone says his training program is trying to offer up a different experience from other gyms in Asheville, comparing it to a new flavor of ice cream.
“You know, we’re just another flavor of ice cream and sometimes you go through ice cream flavors,” he says lighthearted. “You’re like, I hate ice cream. I’m like, I’m over here! So, we’re trying to just be another flavor for folks, you know, folks who don’t want an aggressive environment.”
He says the coaching is very conversational and not intimidating.
“We wanted it to be, you know, done right or our version of what I think is the right way to train for mountains,” he says. “Yeah, it’s a smaller spot. So if you feel intimidated by a large chain, bright lights and people looking at you and all that, you know, the most people we’ll have here at one time is 12, right?…We want to make sure they don’t give up completely and there’s another option.”
Outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to check out the new location by taking advantage of a first-month free deal.
Additionally, MPT is gearing up for a grand opening celebration in the fall, featuring exclusive promotions, facility tours and much more. The official date will be announced soon.
