LAKE LURE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District has made significant progress in its ongoing effort to remove debris from Lake Lure in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.
In the span of just two weeks, crews have cleared half of a massive sediment deposit that had filled large sections of the lake. Photographs taken 14 days apart show a dramatic transformation from a debris-choked landscape to one where water is visible again.
The USACE and its contractors have been working for more than 235 days to clear waterways impacted by the storm. Over the last two weeks, they have removed more than 500,000 cubic yards of debris from Lake Lure. In total, crews have cleared more than 4 million cubic yards from rivers, lakes and streams across the region.
“Every shovel of sediment cleared and every cubic yard of debris removed is a step toward recovery,” officials said in a statement. “The work continues, but the progress speaks for itself.”
