ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville area residents woke to a cold, icy morning.
City of Asheville street teams out early Tuesday morning gritting streets witnessed several wrecks caused by black ice, city officials said. People, especially those in high elevations, are urged to please drive cautiously.
ART/transit
Because of icy road conditions, Asheville Rapid Transit is suspending service. Teams will continue to assess road conditions with the aim of resuming service today as soon as road conditions are safe.
Sanitation
All services are delayed until road conditions improve.
Community centers and programs
Asheville Parks & Recreation Community Centers will operate on an inclement weather schedule. Childcare with indoor activities, crafts and get-to-know-you games available for $5 per child at Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Center (for Buncombe County School students) and Tempie Avery Montford Community Center (for Asheville City School students) from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Each child or teen should bring their own lunch and drink, but snacks are provided.
Burton Street and Murphy-Oakley community centers are closed.
All other community centers will be open from noon-6 p.m., but regular programs are canceled. All sports leagues and athletics practices are also canceled.

Asheville City and Buncombe County schools switched to a remote learning day Tuesday because of road conditions. Asheville–Buncombe Technical Community College was set to open at 10 a.m.
