ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — After going weeks without water in the wake of Helene, Asheville residents are not going to want to be without again anytime soon.

Frozen pipes can be a major issue, especially during colder months, as they can burst and cause significant damage.

Here are some tips to prevent frozen pipes and safely thaw them if they freeze:

Preventing Frozen Pipes

Insulate pipes

  • Use pipe insulation or heat tape on exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics or garages.
  • Pay special attention to pipes near exterior walls or windows.

Seal cracks and openings

  • Seal gaps around pipes, doors and windows where cold air might enter.

Maintain indoor heat

  • Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) even when you’re not home.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

Let faucets drip

  • Allow a slow trickle of water to flow through faucets connected to vulnerable pipes. Moving water is less likely to freeze.

Drain outdoor lines

  • Disconnect hoses, drain outdoor faucets, and shut off water to exterior lines.

Thawing frozen pipes

Identify the frozen area

  • Look for pipes that are frosty or bulging.
  • Turn on faucets to check which ones are affected — if water dribbles or doesn’t flow, the pipe is likely frozen.

Open the faucet

  • Keep the faucet open to allow water to flow when the ice starts melting.

Apply heat

  • Hairdryer: Start near the faucet and work toward the frozen section.
  • Heating pad: Wrap it around the pipe.
  • Warm towels: Soak towels in warm water and wrap them around the pipe.
  • Space heater: Place it near the pipe (keep it away from flammable materials).

Avoid open flames like torches or propane heaters, as they can damage pipes or cause fires.

Monitor for leaks

As the pipe thaws, check for cracks or leaks. A frozen pipe may burst once it thaws because of expansion.

Call a professional

If you’re unable to locate or safely thaw the frozen pipe, contact a plumber.

If a pipe bursts

  • Shut off water at the main valve.
  • If the break is in a hot water pipe, the valve on top of the water heater should be closed.
  • Call a plumber. Keep an emergency number nearby for quick access.
