ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Construction is underway on a new sidewalk along New Haw Creek Road, a project that will add about a mile of pedestrian infrastructure to one of Haw Creek’s main thoroughfares.
The project, prioritized by residents during public outreach for the 2016 bond referendum, aims to improve pedestrian mobility, safety, and connectivity to local schools, parks, and businesses. Key locations along the route include Haw Creek Elementary School, Evergreen Community Charter School, and Charlie Bullman Park.
Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months. One of the first steps in the project will be the removal of trees in the area to meet a tree-clearing deadline designed to protect a local bat species.
Temporary lane closures will be necessary throughout the construction period, but contractors plan to avoid disruptions during peak traffic hours, including school drop-off and pickup times. Signage and detours will be in place to guide drivers safely around the work zone.
Residents can expect construction noise during working hours, and heavy equipment such as excavators, pavers, and trucks will be active in the area. Officials urge pedestrians and drivers to use caution around construction sites.
Regular project updates will be available via email for those subscribed through the city’s project page.
