ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — When people think of important historical figures in Asheville, James Vester Miller is often overlooked.
Miller, a Black brick mason and contractor, built many of the iconic brick buildings in downtown Asheville during the city’s Golden Age. Despite his contributions, his name has remained largely unknown.
During the era of Jim Crow segregation, Miller founded and led a successful construction company, earning a reputation as a master craftsman.
In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve and recognize his legacy. The James Vester Miller Historic Walking Trail highlights his work, and plaques mark several of the buildings he helped construct.
There will be a ceremony Saturday to officially name James Vester Miller Park and unveil new historical signage.
The event is scheduled for noon to 2 p.m. at 477 N. Louisiana Ave. Performers include Ballet Folklorico Raíces and members of the John R. Hayes High Steppin Majorettes and Drum Corps.
