CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Work begins Monday, June 9, on improvements to the Reasonover Creek Trail at DuPont State Recreational Forest, with temporary closures expected as crews upgrade the 3.5-mile route to support increased use and protect the environment.

The upgrades are part of the forest’s Master Recreation Plan and aim to enhance sustainability, reduce erosion and preserve nearby stream water quality, officials said.

“We are excited to improve this valuable trail,” said Jane Dauster, recreation specialist for the forest. “Various sections of the trail project are in protected habitat, so the trail cannot be relocated. For these sections, we will need to use rock armoring to stabilize the eroding trail, especially near creeks and streams.”

Rock armoring is a trail maintenance technique that uses natural stone to reinforce and stabilize sloped or degraded sections of trail, helping preserve the trail’s character while minimizing environmental impact.

Construction is expected to continue through December 2025. Forest staff will supervise the work, which will be carried out in phases to limit the number and length of closures along the trail.

Visitors are urged to follow all posted closures and respect on-site signage during the project.
