ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A proposed Costco development in Asheville remains in limbo, with no active application filed, according to Asheville City Council member Sage Turner.
Earlier this year, Costco requested a pre-application meeting with city staff — a preliminary step meant to help developers understand the city’s review and approval process. However, Turner said the retail giant has taken no further steps since then.
“There is not an active application to build a Costco at this time,” Turner said in a public update.
While the company submitted a site plan and conducted some initial design work, it remains unclear whether they intend to formally apply. The property owner may also be engaged in behind-the-scenes work related to the project.
“We don’t know if they’ll return and apply officially. They could! And they might not,” Turner said.
Turner acknowledged the high level of public interest and said she will share any new information if it becomes available.
