ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Municipal Golf Course is turning part of its storm-damaged fairways into Western North Carolina’s newest disc golf destination.
City officials announced Tuesday that a temporary, championship-level disc golf course is set to open Aug. 1 on the front nine of the historic golf facility at 226 Fairview Drive. The par-61 course was designed in collaboration with professional disc golfer Chris Dickerson, the 2020 U.S. Disc Golf Champion.
The new 18-hole course will feature two tee pad layouts: a blue course spanning more than 8,000 feet and a shorter red course at roughly 6,500 feet.
The course serves as a reuse of land left damaged by Tropical Storm Helene, which caused significant flooding and debris buildup on the front nine. While full golf operations remain suspended on that section of the course, the city has cleared the area to temporarily host the disc golf layout until restoration work begins.
“By converting the damaged areas of the golf course into this temporary activation, we hope to draw locals and visitors back to the site,” said Chris Corl, the city of Asheville’s Director of the Department of Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities. “The damage from Helene devastated this property from a golf standpoint. This project is our way of transforming that destruction into an interim recreational space for our community while we work through the process of initiating the restoration to return golf to the site. Disc golf is a low-impact sport that complements the Muni’s existing rolling open spaces, flora, and wildlife.”
Dickerson called the new course challenging and rewarding.
“This new course will provide a challenge to amateur and pro disc golfers alike,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed being part of the design process and look forward to returning to play it soon.”
The Asheville Municipal Golf Course Pro Shop will serve as the check-in and concessions area. The project is being supported by local partners, including New Belgium Brewing Co. and the WNC Nature Center.
Tee time reservations are open now at AshevilleMuniDisc.com, with walk-ins also welcome. Course rates are $10 per round or $18 for all-day play. Asheville residents will receive discounted rates of $7 and $13, respectively.
The Pro Shop and disc golf course will operate daily from dawn to dusk. For leagues and tournament inquiries, contact Pat Warren at pwarren@ashevillegc.com.
