TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A child stranded by rising floodwaters was rescued Sunday afternoon at Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest, authorities said.

Transylvania County Rescue Squad, along with Transylvania County EMS, Brevard Fire Department and the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene around 4:45 p.m. after the child became trapped on the far side of the river during a sudden flash flood.

According to rescue officials, the child had swum across the base of the waterfall shortly before water levels surged because of earlier rainfall, cutting off the child’s return.

Two swift water technicians were deployed to the base of the falls and used a tether system to safely retrieve the child, who was not injured.

Visitors are reminded to be cautious around rivers and waterfalls, particularly during or after periods of heavy rain.
