CLYDE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Haywood County health officials have confirmed the county’s 13th active case of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, as of Aug. 1.

According to Haywood County Health and Human Services, three of the confirmed cases are adults, while the remaining cases involve children and teenagers under the age of 19.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads through coughing or sneezing and can cause violent coughing fits. The illness poses the greatest risk to infants, pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Health officials are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the number of active cases changes.

Symptoms of pertussis may include:

  • Severe or prolonged coughing fits
  • A “whooping” sound when inhaling after a coughing spell
  • Vomiting after coughing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Mild or no fever

Preventive measures include:

  • Vaccination: The CDC recommends a series of shots for infants starting at 2 months, a booster for preteens around age 11 or 12, a Tdap booster for adults who have not previously received one, and a Tdap shot during each pregnancy.
  • Staying home when sick: Individuals with symptoms should avoid work, school or daycare to reduce the risk of transmission.
  • Good hygiene practices: Frequent handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes can help limit the spread of the illness.

Vaccinations are available at Haywood County Health and Human Services at 157 Paragon Parkway in Clyde. Services are available to insured and uninsured patients. For appointments or more information, call 828-452-6675.
