ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —
If you believe in aliens and UFOs, and even if you don’t, the Spruce Pine Alien Festival could be a learning experience either way.
Organizers hope thousands of people — believers and non-believers — attend the event that director Sherry Saunter said is based on true sightings.
“If you are a true believer, you’re going to get a lot of information you don’t usually get anywhere else,” she said.
The festival, set for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 8, on Oak Avenue in downtown Spruce Pine, will include an Area 51 costume contest, food, music and 175 artists, crafters and vendors.
“It’s a really great mixture. It’s kind of a galactic adventure if you think about it,” Saunter said.

The festival will also include an AlienXPO Speaker Conference featuring experts dedicated to answering the question, “Are we alone in the universe?” Speakers will include the History Channel’s Mike Bara, USO/UFOlogist Christian MacLeod, radio host and author Brooks Agnew, film director Ash Hamilton, alien experiencer Robin Haynes and novelist James Rink.
Saunter said the festival came about because of the numerous UFO sightings in the Spruce Pine area.
“We have been seeing things we can’t explain for years, and when you talk about it with other people, they say, ‘I saw the same thing,'” she said. “Downtown Spruce Pine is kind of a hot spot.”
Seers and experiencers
Of the 8,332 UFO incidents reported around the world in 2023, some 6,696 were from the United States and 170 of those were in North Carolina, Sev Tok, the state director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), said.
“North Carolina is actually one of the busiest states in the country for sightings,” Tok said.
North Carolina ranked No. 12 in the country in 2023, said Tok, who is also part of the MUFON Experiencer Resource Team.
“There are definitely beings who are talking and communicating with us,” Tok said.
MUFON deals with those who see UFOs (seers) and those who report contact with an alien (experiencers).

“I’m an experiencer since childhood,” Tok said, describing the “X” marking she had on her buttocks after her visits. “Once you get over the fear, there’s so much beauty in these experiences.”

But many people are afraid to discuss their experiences, Tok said.
“Often, they’re in a fragile state,” she said. “And they’re afraid of what people might say. We’re taught to be embarrassed taught to keep our mouths closed. But they want to get it out. They want to get it off their chest with someone who is not judgmental.”
And MUFON offers them that chance.

Tok believes the main purpose of alien visits or abductions is to give humans information.
“My experience with ETs is that they were very kind and loving. They’re not trying to victimize you. They want to empower you,” she said. “But it’s up to the experiencer. What are you going to do with that information?”

Spruce Pine Alien Festival
The festival happens 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 8, on Oak Avenue in downtown Spruce Pine.
More than 25,000 attended last year’s event and organizers hope to double that number this year.
The festival is free and pet-friendly.
However, the Alien Train and AlienXpo Speaker Conference require payment.
Saunter said the festival is about having fun, but it’s also about learning about the beyond.
“When people tell us they’ve seen UFOs, we don’t take it with a grain of salt. We believe it,” she said. “If you believe God created all things, how can you not believe he made aliens, too?” Saunter asked.
