Police Chief Mike Lamb is scheduled to give an update on the city’s solicitation ordinance, including panhandling issues and statistics on high-traffic zones, during a virtual meeting of Asheville’s Environment and Safety Committee next week.

The Asheville Police Department issued a press release on Friday, June 21, highlighting a special operation “targeting quality-of-life issues” based on complaints from community organizations about issues like trespassing, larceny, public intoxication and drug use.

According to the release, 22 people were charged with a total of 31 crimes, including 10 arrests — one of which was a felony for alleged larceny. In addition, 14 warrants were served, the release stated.

The lengthy list included four charges related to panhandling, and among the others were alleged trespassing, possession of drugs or drug paraphernalia, larceny, public urination and more.

Next week’s Environment and Safety Committee meeting agenda also includes an update on a 10-year plan update for Recreate Asheville: Shaping Our City’s Parks.
